Training an adult dog to use Wee-Wee® Pads is easy.
- Place a Wee-Wee® Pad in your pet’s elimination spot. Choose a location that is out of the way of your home’s heaviest foot traffic but easy for your dog to access whenever the need arises. He will appreciate a small amount of privacy, but out of sight could mean out of mind. A corner of a room usually works well.
- Delivering your dog to his potty spot will be helpful in the beginning. The scent of the Wee-Wee® Housebreaking Aid will encourage him to eliminate right away, but be sure to return your pet to the pad when the need to use it is the most likely. Offer your dog a chance to empty his bladder directly after waking, about 20 minutes after drinking water, and following vigorous play sessions. Charting his successes and failures can help you pinpoint other times when he is most likely to go.
- When your dog eliminates on the Wee-Wee® Pad, shower him with heartfelt praise. You may also offer treats such as edible rewards or a toy at this time. The most important thing is that your dog links eliminating on the pad with pleasant results. Rewarded behaviors tend to become repeated behaviors.
- After tossing the soiled pad into the trash, replace it with a new one. As soon as you apply the Wee-Wee® Housebreaking Aid to the fresh Wee-Wee® Pad, your dog will be ready to continue down the road to housetraining success.
- If you are transitioning your dog from indoor training to eliminating outdoors, begin moving the pad just a bit closer to the door after each success. You needn’t move it far—just a foot or two at a time will gradually lure your pet to the door. You should then move the pad to the outdoor potty spot and begin taking him there at regular intervals as outlined on his housetraining chart. Soon your formerly indoor-trained animal will become an outdoor-trained dog!
